There was a time when you and your partner used to travel to new places without any worries. Then came the new member of your family and you paused any type of travelling (at least not the big ones). Now you are thinking about travelling again for any reason, might it be for fun or might it be for necessity. But this time you cannot just plan to go somewhere overnight, you have to do lots of planning and prepare yourself mentally and physically. As a mother of an infant and a toddler, who had to travel recently, I wanted to share my experiences with you.
Is it okay to travel with a child?
Of course, as long as you plan accordingly. I have travelled 3 hours one way (total trip: more than 6 hours only in car) with my 3 week old baby. If you have an infant, plan to give a stop every 2/3 hours. Stop, pick the baby up from the car seat, change diaper, give some snuggle and may be play with him/her for few minutes and then you are good to go again.
Steps to a Successful Trip
Travelling with a baby can be hectic but with proper planning, it is possible. For that, you need to follow some steps.
Step 1: Planning
When you are travelling with a child, what you need is lots of planning. The planning includes where to go, when to go, where to stay, where to eat etc. If you are travelling for a weekend, try to book a hotel or airbnb as early as possible. Take a pen and paper (or note in your phone) and write down the itinerary for each day. Winging it as you go is bit difficult with a baby (specially an infant). Also, if you have an infant, you might do a quick research regarding the pharmacy/urgent care facilities of your destination.
Step 2: Make List
Start making list of what to take with you at least 1 week before the trip. Keep adding to the the list as soon as you think of anything important. An example of how a list might look like is:
- “x” count of diaper (if you are going away for more days, you can buy diaper depending on where you will be staying. In that case, you don’t need to carry a box of diaper with you)
- Wipes
- Diaper changing pad (multiple)
- Your child’s favorite snacks (take some extra just in case)
- Breastfeeding and breast-pumping necessities (Bottle, breastpump, bottle cleaning supplies etc.)
- Lots of dress for the baby
- Baby food (for my toddler, I would cook some food and freeze them beforehand and take them with me. They will stay cold for a long time during the journey and I would heat them up in a microwave oven or in gas oven depending on where we live. We would have lunch in a restaurant but for the dinner, I would make sure that she is eating something homemade and healthy. Sometimes, I would take some pasta, noodles, rice with me which is very easy to cook at an airbnb. And if you have an infant, you can take any type of baby food that you prefer, including soft fruits, rice cereals etc).
- Some musical toys for the infant to play at the car and some coloring books or story books for the toddler
- Some disposable glass, plates and spoons which might be very handy.
- Phone/tablet charger
- Tablet for your toddler
- A medicine bag containing different types of medicine which you might need (tylenol, gas drop, cough syrup etc.)
Step 3: Packing
Start packing a bit early than usual. Don’t put all the items in the list in your luggage. Depending on your travelling time, put some diaper, wipe, changing pad, baby food, toys/books in the diaper bag which will be near you.
Step 4: Day of Travelling
Start getting ready a couple of hours ago. It’s good if the baby wakes up early that day. in that case, he/she is going to nap longer in the car. Just before you get in the car, feed your infant/toddler and do a diaper change. If your child’s nap time is 1.00pm, try to start at 12.00pm so that he/she will get in the car, play or snack for some time and take a nap. If it’s a 4 hour journey and your child naps for 2 hours, then he/she will wake up from nap and spend 1 more hour in the car and you will reach your destination. In that way, he/she won’t be bored for long time.
Step 5: Travelling
As I told earlier, with an infant try to give a stop after every 2/3 hours. Don’t put the baby too long in the car seat. Pick him/her up when you stop, do a feeding and diaper change and give some snuggles. If he/she is used to bottle, then you can skip the feeding and feed him/her when the car is moving. And with a toddler, I have experienced that stopping in a fast-food chain (like McDonald’s ) is more productive. In that way, we can quickly refreshen, have a quick lunch or snacks, the toddler becomes happy with the new toy and it’s fast and cheap. Within 1 hour, we continue our journey.
Step 5: Staying at an Airbnb or Hotel
For a 1 or 2 day vacation, you can always choose a hotel. But to my experience, Airbnb is more comfortable choice for a longer stay. For a short time also, an Airbnb might be cheaper that hotel if you have a big family. To me, one important reason for choosing Airbnb is the kitchen. I came from Asian background and rice is the staple food for our lunch and dinner. It is the same for my toddler also. So, usually I cook some vegetables and protein from home and freeze them and take them in a cooler. And at the Airbnb, I can quickly cook some rice and serve my toddler some balanced food. Also, for breakfast, we can quickly cook some eggs and have a homecooked meal. It’s all up to your preference. My toddler is a picky eater so I had to adjust to her preference. If you and your children are comfortable with restaurant food, go with it!
Useful Tips:
- Manage your expectations:
- If you are on a vacation and going to see new places, don’t expect this trip is going to be something like previous. Keep in mind that you won’t be able to take as much photos as you could earlier. You are going to be tired. You won’t be able to visit all the important places. You have to make adjustments to the little one’s need. Maybe you have to see some places from inside the car.
- Bathing the baby:
- Sometimes when you are on a trip, it might be difficult to bath your baby everyday because you might not get time or you might not like the bathroom in your hotel. In that case, opt for alternatives. Soak a towel and carefully wipe you baby’s body including the head. This will sooth the baby.
- Daily routine disruption:
- If you are very organized person who likes to follow certain routine, keep in mind that your routine is going to get disrupted. Try not to get too upset about it. If you are used to feeding your baby a very healthy diet, you might have to opt for an unhealthy option few times during the trip. You can minimize the frequency by careful planning but it will be difficult to ignore it completely.
- Useful gadgets and tools:
- Take the help of different electrical gadgets to make your trip easy. If you are travelling for a long time and your baby is bottle-fed, you can opt for a portable bottle warmer. Also, you can buy portable food warmer to heat up your toddler’s lunch on the go. When we travelled to Yosemite, where there is not enough restaurants at night, we took our air-fryer with us to heat up some ready to cook food. Research well before buying anything. You don’t want to buy an expensive item and use it once or twice in the whole trip. Think it through if you really need this item or not.
- Prepare for the cold:
- Always research about the weather of your destination. Take necessary precaution if there is a cold night. Especially, if you are going to or near mountain, take warm clothes with you.
- Start small:
- With an infant, try not to plan a big trip even before he/she has a one day outing. See his/her attitude when you go outside and prepare accordingly.
My advice to you is that, don’t stop travelling altogether once you have a baby. The earlier you start to having small trips with your newborn, the earlier he/she is going to adjust (and even enjoy) these trips. With an active toddler, these trips can be a way of including their active personality to an enjoyable event for all of you.
